Abstract
This study aims to analyze the meanings of the terms at-tawwābīn and al-mutathahhirīn in Qur'an Surah Al-Baqarah verse 222 using Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic theory. The research is motivated by the need to understand the concepts of repentance and purification in the Qur'an through the semantic relationships that shape the Qur'anic worldview.
This research employs a qualitative library research method. Primary data were obtained from the Qur'an, Qur'anic commentaries, and Toshihiko Izutsu’s works, while secondary data were collected from books, journals, and related studies. The analysis focuses on the basic meaning, relational meaning, and semantic field of the two key terms.
The findings reveal that at-tawwābīn refers to those who continually return to Allah through repentance, while al-mutathahhirīn refers to those who continuously strive to purify themselves physically and spiritually. According to Izutsu’s semantic perspective, both terms form an integrated concept of spiritual transformation. Therefore, Al-Baqarah verse 222 not only discusses the legal aspects of menstruation but also emphasizes that Allah loves those who constantly repent and maintain purity in their lives.
Abstrak
Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis makna lafadz at-tawwābīn dan al-mutathahhirīn dalam QS. Al-Baqarah ayat 222 menggunakan teori semantik Toshihiko Izutsu. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh pentingnya memahami konsep taubat dan kesucian dalam Al-Qur’an secara lebih mendalam melalui analisis makna dan hubungan antarkonsep dalam sistem bahasa Al-Qur’an.
Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan metode kepustakaan (library research). Data primer berupa Al-Qur’an, kitab tafsir, dan karya-karya Toshihiko Izutsu, sedangkan data sekunder berasal dari buku, jurnal, dan penelitian terkait. Analisis data dilakukan melalui pendekatan semantik dengan menelusuri makna dasar (basic meaning), makna relasional (relational meaning), serta medan semantik kedua lafadz tersebut.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa at-tawwābīn bermakna orang-orang yang senantiasa kembali kepada Allah melalui taubat, sedangkan al-mutathahhirīn bermakna orang-orang yang terus berupaya menyucikan diri secara lahir dan batin. Dalam perspektif Izutsu, kedua lafadz tersebut membentuk satu kesatuan konsep yang menggambarkan proses transformasi spiritual manusia. QS. Al-Baqarah ayat 222 tidak hanya berbicara tentang hukum haid, tetapi juga menegaskan bahwa Allah mencintai hamba yang selalu memperbaiki diri melalui taubat dan menjaga kesucian hidupnya.
